Ten dead and 38 injured in three separate incidents were the tragic toll of mass shootings just before the 4th of July holiday
Ten people were killed and 38 were injured in mass shooting incidents in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Fort Worth shortly before yesterday’s Independence Day in the US, officials announced, while the president Joe Biden again called for gun control legislation.
In Fort Worth three people were killed and eight were wounded in a mass shooting that occurred after a Fourth of July celebration, police said Tuesday.
In another similar incident in Philadelphia on Monday night, five people were killed and two others were injured — a 2-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy who were shot in the legs — when a suspect wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle opened fire on a crowd, according to police.
Besides, on Sunday night, two people were killed and 28 others were injured, about half of them children, by gunfire during a celebration in the neighborhood of Baltimore.
The motives for these three incidents remain unclear.
The US is facing a high number of mass shootings and an increase in gun violence.
There have been more than 340 mass shootings in the country so far, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines “mass shootings” as attacks with firearms in which there are four or more victims in addition to the perpetrator.
Yesterday the American president condemned the violence and repeated his call for stricter gun laws.
“Our country has once again suffered a wave of tragic and senseless shootings,” Biden said in a statement, asking Republicans to “come to the table for sensible reforms that make sense.”
Citing Americans’ constitutional right to own guns, Republicans in Congress have blocked attempts to make major reforms to gun laws and oppose Biden’s desire to reinstate a ban on assault rifles.
We “beg” for action
Officials from Philadelphia asked state and federal lawmakers to take action.
“We’re imploring Congress to protect lives and do something about America’s gun problem,” said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, a Democrat.
City Attorney General Larry Krasner called on politicians in Philadelphia to adopt “common sense legislation” similar to those in neighboring New Jersey and Delaware.
Philadelphia police said the attacker was a 40-year-old man who was carrying an AR-40 semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm handgun, while wearing a bulletproof vest and ski mask.
The dead were between the ages of 15 and 59.
Krasner pledged to bring multiple charges of murder and other crimes against the perpetrator of the massacre.
Police in Fort Worth said no arrests have yet been made following the mass shooting at the Como Fest events, which are held in the Como neighborhood to celebrate its African-American history.
“I believe some miscreants have come into this neighborhood to spread panic,” Mayor Matty Parker said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Eyewitnesses said they heard shootings just before midnight, with some initially thinking it was fireworks, according to the Dallas Morning News.
In Baltimore, police said they are looking for multiple suspects.
