Ukrainian troops advanced more than a kilometer in the last day against Russian forces near the eastern city of Bakhmut, a military spokesman said today.

His remarks are the latest comments from Kiev in a sign that the counteroffensive launched in early June is gradually making progress, although Russian accounts of the clashes in the Bakhmut region differ from those in Ukraine.

“The defense forces continue to have the initiative there, putting pressure on the enemy, conducting offensive operations, advancing along the northern and southern flanks of the front,” army spokesman Serhiy Tserevaty told Ukrainian television. “Especially, during the last day, they advanced more than a kilometer.”

A spokesman for the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces said Ukrainian forces had “partial success” near the village of Klisyifka, southwest of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian military analysts have said securing Klysiyivka will help Ukraine retake Bakhmut, which was captured by Russian forces in May after 10 months of heavy fighting.
