The BBC, based on open sources, managed to identify the names 27,423 Russian military personnel who lost their lives in the war in Ukraine. These include at least 240 peopleincluding several high-ranking officers who died trying to fend off a counterattack by the Ukrainian armed forces.

In total, between 4 June and 7 July, the BBC’s Russian Service in collaboration with the MediaZone website (recognized in Russia as a “foreign agent”) and a team of volunteers managed to identify the deaths 553 peoplewhile for 313 soldiers whose death has been confirmed in the last month, the date of death has not been known.

This number that has been recorded and concerns those who were killed while repelling the counterattack of the Ukrainian army constitutes the lowest estimate of Russian losses. This number includes only those whose obituaries mention the relevant circumstances of death, or those whose dates of death coincide with the dates of the counterattack. The actual number of victims is certainly higher than what has been recorded.

The BBC’s Russian service specifically states that it publishes only the information it is able to find and verify from open sources: reports from officials and media, posts by close relatives of the dead on social media and information from cemeteries.
