The official opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE interrupts all contacts with the government, as announced today by the leader of this party, Christian Mickoski.

According to him, VMRO-DPMNE will sit down to talk with the government only in the event of early parliamentary elections in the country.

VMRO-DPMNE insists on holding early parliamentary elections in the fall, while the government of Dimitar Kovacevsky rules out such a possibility.

We have no communication with the government, this week we had a meeting of the party’s Executive Committee and we made a unanimous decision that as VMRO-DPMNE we stop all official communication on a bilateral level with representatives of the government. There is only one thing we can talk about, and that is to sit down and agree on the elections, when the elections will be held and how they will be held, in what manner – with a caretaker government, without a caretaker government and everything else connected with the electionsMickoski said.

He reiterated that his party is not going to consent to the possibility of amending the Constitution and that for VMRO-DPMNE this issue is considered “finished”.

For his part, the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, said yesterday that in about two weeks the government will submit to the Parliament its proposal for constitutional amendments and the process for revising the Constitution will begin.

The possibility of amending the Constitution, based on an agreement between North Macedonia and Bulgaria, in order to include the Bulgarian minority living in the country, is an issue that has been causing tremors in Skopje for a year.

Under the EU-brokered agreement last summer, amending North Macedonia’s Constitution is a condition for Skopje to begin accession negotiations with the EU.

Amending the Constitution of North Macedonia requires a 2/3 majority in the Parliament, which the pro-Western government in Skopje and the parties supporting the agreement with Bulgaria do not currently have.

The nationalist VMRO-DPMNE claims the agreement with Bulgaria was “dictated” by Sofia and considers it harmful to North Macedonia’s national interests.
