Protesters have been filmed setting off fireworks during the violent riots following the fatal shooting of the 17-year-old
France has banned the sale, possession and transport of fireworks over the Bastille Day weekend next week, amid fears of fresh riots.
Protesters have been filmed throwing fireworks during the violent riots following the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Nael by a police officer.
“In order to avoid the risk of serious public disturbance during the July 14 celebrations, the sale, transportation, transportation and use of pyrotechnic articles and fireworks is prohibited throughout France until July 15,” according to the decree which published in the official French government.
Bastille Day, which is France’s national day, is celebrated every year on July 14 with spectacular fireworks displays across the country.
The ordinance, which went into effect immediately, does not apply to businesses or local areas that hold holiday fireworks displays.
French Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne had promised “massive measures to protect the French” on July 13-14, which she described as “sensitive days” in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper published on Saturday.
In the same interview, Bourne confirmed that the French government is considering fining parents of minors involved in riots, according to CNN’s BFMTV.
On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron proposed imposing “a kind of minimum duty from the first stupid act” on parents of minors, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.
Bourne told Le Parisien that the government is considering the measure and is ready to “advance the law” if necessary, according to BFMTV. “Today, when an adult commits an act of this nature, we can appeal through a fixed fine. It’s fast and efficient. This is not possible for minors. So we’re going to create a provision that allows that,” Borne said.
Minors aged 12 and 13 were arrested by police during the recent riots, according to the country’s interior minister, Gerald Darmanin.
Darmanin told reporters last weekend that the average age of thousands of people arrested by French police was 17.
