Disagreements between coalition government partners over immigration policy caused the collapse of the Rutte government.
The 56-year-old Rutte, who is facing a motion of impeachment in Parliament after his government resigned, has announced that he does not intend to seek re-election for a fifth term addressing the Dutch parliamentarians at the Hague.
“Yesterday morning I made the decision that I will no longer be leader of the VVD (Party for Freedom and Democracy – the largest party in the collapsed government coalition) in the upcoming elections. When a new government takes over after the elections, I will leave politics,” he said. “I do it with mixed feelings, emotionally charged (…) But I feel I’m doing the right thing” he added.
Rutte, who leads the Netherlands since 2010, he is the longest-serving prime minister in the country’s history, and the second-longest after Hungary’s Viktor Orbán. He will remain as head of a caretaker government until a new government is formed after the next election, a process that in the Netherlands’ fragmented political landscape could take months.
