Temperatures remained extremely hot overnight from Sunday into Monday.
Just two weeks after a previous similar episodeSpain is again facing extreme heat today with the thermometer expected to show up to 44 degrees, as announced by the Spanish Meteorological Service (Aemet).
“The heat will be particularly intense today and tomorrow across most of the peninsula and the Balearic archipelago. 38 or 40 degrees will be exceeded in large areas of the country and 42 or 44 degrees in areas of Andalusia (south) or Aragon (Aragon), in the northeast”said Ruben del Campo, a spokesman for Aemet, in a message sent to the press.
According to Aemet’s readings, temperatures remained extremely high overnight from Sunday to Monday. At midnight (local time) the thermometer showed 33.1 degrees in the Osuna area, in the province of Seville (south).
A European country on the front lines of global warming, Spain is used to heatwaves — especially in the south — but in recent years heatwaves have become more frequent and more intense, scientists say.
An episode of extreme heat already occurred two weeks ago and another at the end of April, resulting in an absolute record temperature for the month of April in mainland Spain at 38.8 degrees, a level matching the month of July.
Last summer’s record high temperatures directly killed more than 350 people and contributed to a more than 20% increase in deaths between May and August, according to official figures.
