Shouting the slogan “justice!”, journalists gathered yesterday Monday in cities in Mexico to protest, after the new killing of their colleague last week in a state in the northwestern part of the country

“It is not possible for the country to remain the most dangerous in the world to practice journalism,” stressed press workers gathered in Ciudad Juarez (north), on the border with the US.

“We demand a full investigation and to punish not only the perpetrators, but also the moral perpetrators,” said a protester in Oaxaca (south).

A rally was planned to take place in the evening (local time) in the capital.

Luis Martín Sánchez Iñez, a correspondent for La Jornada newspaper in Nayarit state, was found murdered on Saturday.

The delegation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called for a “swift, thorough, independent and effective” investigation into the reporter’s murder.

“A report will be made public” tomorrow Tuesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador promised, calling the crime “bad news”.

The first elements of the investigation indicate that the murder was connected to the journalistic work of the victim, according to the Nayarit prosecutor’s office.

Luis Martín Sánchez Iníguez was the first working professional journalist to be murdered in Mexico this year.

In 2022, 13 journalists or those involved in “information” were murdered, according to the government. Their number even exceeded those recorded in war zones, such as Ukraine.

Mexican authorities are investigating whether the killings were linked to their work.

Journalistic investigations of corruption, crime or drug cartels in Mexico are almost always dangerous for those who dare to do so.

Since 2000, more than 150 journalists have been murdered in the country, according to figures from the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Most of the victims lived in states affected by the activity of drug-trafficking gangs, such as two other contributors to the newspaper La Hornada, Javier Valdez (Sinaloa) and Miroslava Bric (Chihuahua), who were murdered in 2017.

The vast majority of crimes against journalists in Mexico go unpunished.
