Three members of the Shiite Hezbollah group were wounded today by gunfire near the border with Israel, a security source in southern Lebanon said.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters, told AFP that the three Hezbollah members were wounded “by Israeli fire.” The information was confirmed by three other sources.

The incident comes on the 17th anniversary of the start of the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, which killed 1,200 people in Lebanon (mostly civilians) and about 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers fighting Hezbollah inside the Lebanese soil.

So far there is no comment from Hezbollah’s press office. The Israeli military said it used a “non-lethal weapon” to remove “a number of suspects” who attempted to destroy the security fence on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon.

The Lebanese source who described the developments to the Reuters agency spoke of an “attack”. Another security source said Israeli forces fired a grenade, injuring three people.

Israel’s public Kan TV reported that Hezbollah members set fire to the border, setting off landmines and that Israeli soldiers fired warning shots.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is expected to appear on television later today to make a statement on the anniversary of the 2006 war.
