A man was arrested in New York State as suspected of a series of murders committed at least a decade ago. His victims serial killer they were mostly sex workers whose bodies were found on a Long Beach beach.

Eleven human remains were found in 2010 and 2011 in an isolated area of ​​Gilgo Beach, about 40 miles (64 km) east of New York City. These murders had then shocked the whole country.

Suffolk County Sheriff Rodney Harrison said a man was arrested as a suspect Thursday night. He did not release his identity, saying only that a grand jury is expected to indict him this afternoon.

Speaking to reporters outside a home in Massapiqua, Long Island, Harrison declined to elaborate. He said information would be given at a press conference to be held later today.

Citing a law enforcement official, NBC television reported that the suspect is Rex Heuerman, a 59-year-old architect from Massapiqua, a town about a 20-minute drive from Gilgo Beach. The New York Times also writes that the arrested person is Rex Heuerman.

Some of the victims were found wrapped in burlap sacks. Five of the bodies were found to be those of missing sex workers who sought clients online, including through the classifieds service Craiglist. The remains belonged to nine women, one man and an infant girl. Police believed one person was responsible for all the murders.
