More than 20 people have been killed in a powerful explosion that shook the community of Apiate in western Ghana, Xinhua news agency reported, citing local officials.
The tragedy occurred when a truck carrying explosives at the Chirano gold mine collided with a motorcycle. “The motorcycle entered the current in which the truck was moving and the collision caused sparks that caused the explosion,” the deputy director of the National Disaster Management Agency told the Chinese news agency.
According to him, about 500 houses were destroyed by the horrific explosion, while the displaced families have found temporary shelter in churches and schools in neighboring cities.
