A US soldier crossed the border into North Korea and has reportedly been captured, a US official told Reuters, sparking a fresh crisis between the two countries.
The United Nations Command that oversees the border demilitarized zone area earlier on Tuesday identified the person as a US citizen who crossed into North Korea without permission while on tour. He said the person was possibly in custody, but did not provide further details.
South Korean newspaper Dong-a Ilbo, citing the South Korean military, identified the man as Travis King, an American soldier. However, the newspaper later deleted the name. Reuters could not immediately confirm the person’s identity.
The episode comes at a sensitive time amid high tensions on the Korean peninsula, with a US nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine arriving in South Korea in a rare visit after decades as a warning to North Korea about its own military activities
