At least eight people were killed from the landslide that occurred in Cundinamarca in southeastern Colombia, where the fate of others 11 people are missing.

Colonel Jorge Dias, commander of the regional civil protection service, clarified that among the victims is a child, six wounded were hospitalized and about 20 houses were destroyed. “It is not possible to determine the exact number of missing people, but we estimate that it is eleven (…) We are trying to identify the occupants of the 20 destroyed houses,” he said.

Due to the heavy rains that preceded the region, shortly before midnight on Monday to Tuesday (local time) a large landslide occurred at a toll station located near the city of Coutame, about 60 kilometers away from the capital Bogota.

Many vehicles, including trucks and motorcycles, were buried under the mud. Firefighters removed about 40 people, six of whom were taken to hospital.

Rescue crews are using drones in searches to locate missing persons. In some places the mud is forming volumes one or even two meters high, Coutame Mayor Camilo Parado told El Dorado radio station.

Last December, 34 people died in a landslide in northwestern Colombia. Eight children were among the victims.
