Deputy President Martin Hunt declared a “state of disaster” across Nauru, one of the world’s smallest nations at just 21 sq km
Schools and workplaces on the tiny island Nauru Pacific will be closed and areas evacuated on Thursday while Australian soldiers try to defuse a 227kg bomb dating back to the Second World War.
Deputy President Martin Hunt declared a “state of disaster” for the whole of Nauru, one of the world’s smallest nations at just 21 sq km.
“The bomb is extremely dangerous, so our primary concern was the safety of the people of Nauru as well as the vital infrastructure that provides water and electricity in the immediate vicinity,” Commander Lieutenant General Jordan Bell said in an Australian Defense Force statement. .
Nauru’s population of 11,000 live along a coastal strip only 150-300 meters wide.
On Thursday morning, a 2km area around the bomb will be evacuated as Australian pyrotechnicians attempt to disarm the bomb. Authorities urged residents to cover windows with blankets before evacuating to prepare their homes for potential damage from the blast.
