Five politicians and the pilot were killed yesterday Wednesday in a plane crash in central Colombia.

The Cessna T210N aircraft crashed under unclear circumstances near the city of San Luis de Gaseno, northeast of the capital Bogota, killing the pilot and five members of the conservative Centro Democratico (“Democratic Center”) party of former president Alvaro Uribe.

The dead are former senator Nora Tovar, her husband Guillermo Perez (coordinator of the party in the province of Meta), congressman Dimas Barrero, Oscar Rodríguez (municipal councilor of Villavicencio) and Felipe Carreno (candidate for mayor of Meta in the October elections).

According to Colombian media reports, the officials of the Centro Democratico had departed by plane from the city of Villavicencio bound for Bogotá, in order to attend a party event.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed via Twitter his sadness at the plane tragedy and his condolences to the families of the victims.
