Spanish opera star Placido Domingo denied allegations of sexual harassment made against him two years ago in an interview with a newspaper on Friday, saying he had done nothing wrong and said he regretted not speaking.
A 2020 study by the American Association of Music Artists (AGMA) concluded that Domingo, 81, had misbehaved with many artists. As part of this research, at least 35 singers, dancers, musicians, vocal teachers and stage technicians testified that they were witnesses or that they had experienced the inappropriate behavior of the artist in the last 30 years.
At the time, Domingo had issued a statement saying he respected the women’s decision to speak openly and that he “really regretted the pain he caused them”.
As a result of the investigation, Spain canceled Domingo’s scheduled appearances in state-funded theaters. The New York Metropolitan Opera and the San Francisco Opera also canceled his performances, and he resigned as director general of the Los Angeles Opera.
The Los Angeles Opera, in its own research, concluded that ten charges against Domingo were “credible.”
None of the cases have been taken to court.
Placido Domingo, in an interview with El Mundo newspaper, said he had never harassed anyone and that he felt he had been convicted in a public court for not speaking out. “The main mistake I made was to remain silent for so long,” he told the Spanish newspaper. “I do not like conflicts. That’s why I stepped aside and did not say my opinion, while watching how, at one point, years of work and effort were erased “, he added.
According to Domingo, AGMA’s investigation was biased and did not include specific facts.
AGMA did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The Los Angeles Opera House said it had nothing to add other than the initial announcement it made following its own investigation.
Domingo returned to Spain and appeared at a charity concert in June, after being off the stage for almost a year and a half. Since then she has appeared in various countries and in July she is going to sing at Verdi’s opera Nabucco, again in Spain.
