Silvio Berlusconi finally withdrew his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. “I have decided to take this step with national unity in mind,” Cavaliere said. In fact – according to observers – he found that he would not be able to secure the necessary votes to be elected – although he continues to argue otherwise.
Now “Mr. TV” on the one hand hopes that the new president will come from the center-right anyway (in the last few hours the name of the current President of the Senate Elizabeta Cazelati is heard). On the other hand, Silvio would like to be ordained, relatively soon, a lifelong senator. This is an honorary position that is usually given to people with great social, political or scientific activity.
Will Draghi insist?
Regarding the process of electing the president, everything starts at noon on Monday, at 3 local time, in the Parliament of Rome, with the first ballot and with the participation of 1,008 large voters. Of course, Mario Draghi’s candidacy remains on the table, even though no one has yet been officially named. But there is also the possibility that he will be asked by the current president, Sergio Matarella, to remain in his position for a second term. Or select a lesser-known, generally accepted person, as has often been the case in the past. The Center-Left and the Five Stars are currently limited to calling for a joint effort by representatives of all parliamentary groups.
What needs to be clarified, of course, is what will happen to the government. If Draghi is elected president, the parties that support him do not want him to be replaced by a new, technocratic prime minister. But at the same time they do not want to go to early elections. In all this, it is not entirely certain that all the MPs and senators of each party – at the critical moment of the vote – will adapt and obey the choices of their leadership.
