Ukrainian intelligence services foiled an attempt by Russian hackers to penetrate the information system of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the SBU announced today.

Kiev recently reported an increase in Russian attempts to penetrate the information systems of the Ukrainian government, armed forces and energy sector after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly denied these accusations.

“As a result of complex measures, the SBU uncovered and blocked the illegal actions of Russian hackers who tried to penetrate Ukrainian military networks and organize intelligence gathering,” the agency said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.

According to the agency, the hackers attempted to gain access to “sensitive information” around the location and movements of armed forces units and the technical support they receive. The SBU says responsibility for the attack lies with a group of Russian hackers known in the cybersecurity community by the nickname Sandworm. Experts found that the hackers planned to use Ukrainian military tablets to spread viruses into the system, he added.
