Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Iran in recent daysafter more than seven years of strained relations between the countries, the Iranian news agency Irna announced today.

TIran and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement on March 10, brokered by Chinato end their diplomatic standoff and restore relations after years of hostility during which the two countries had supported opposing camps in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.

The Sunni kingdom broke its ties to Shiite Iran in 2016 after protesters attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran in retaliation for Riyadh’s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric.

The reopening of the Sunni kingdom’s embassy in Shiite Iran is the culmination of this rapprochement between the two countries.

“The Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Iran has officially started its activities in our country since Sunday,” Irna news agency announced, citing an unnamed Iranian diplomatic source.

The announcement has not been confirmed by the Saudi government.

The Islamic Republic reopened its diplomatic mission in Riyadh on June 6 during an official ceremony held at the embassy premises.

Tehran appointed diplomat Alireza Enayati as its ambassador to Saudi Arabiawhile Riyadh has not yet introduced its diplomatic representative to Iran.

In mid-June, the head of Saudi diplomacy, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, paid an official visit to Iran. It was the first visit by a Saudi foreign minister to that country in 17 years.
