The murder of a 5-year-old schoolgirl has caused disgust in northern Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, where the First Lady is supporting the call for the public execution of the main suspect.
Hanifa Abubakar was abducted in December. He was then poisoned with rat poison and then buried in a pit in Kano, in the northern part of the country, it was reported by the local police.
The owner of the school where he was going, Abdulmalik Mohamed Tanko, was arrested and confessed to abducting the little girl to get ransom, before poisoning her, according to the same source.

Manir Haruna, a trader in Kano, explained that his 8-year-old son “has not left the house since the discovery of Hanifa’s body and the arrest of the teacher” because he is afraid.
According to police, Tanko organized the kidnapping of the child with the help of two other people, in order to demand a ransom of 6 million naira (about 13,000 euros) from her father. But when the little girl recognized the main suspect, he forced her to drink the poison.
The three suspects were prosecuted on Tuesday for kidnapping, gang formation and murder, according to Kano police spokesman Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.
Aisha Bukhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Bukhari, today backed a call by a prominent ultra-conservative cleric, Sheikh Abdullah Umar Gandonkaya, known by the nickname Malam, for the public execution of the suspect.
“We support Malam’s verdict,” she wrote on her Instagram account with the hashtag #JusticeforHanifa.
For her part, UN Under-Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said she was “outraged and deeply outraged” by the girl’s death, calling for “justice to be done for Hanifa and all the girls who suffered these atrocities.”
