His arrest was confirmed on social media by the prosecutor’s office, but did not specify the charges against Ranoke, 47, who belongs to the indigenous Uitoto tribe.
The father of two of the four indigenous children rescued in the Amazon jungle in Colombia, Manuel Ranoke, was arrested yesterday after being accused of sexually assaulting one of his ancestors.
His arrest was confirmed on social media by the prosecutor’s office, but the charges against 47-year-old Ranoke, who belongs to the indigenous Uitoto tribe, were not specified.
“Full information will be given during the trial. We expect the hearing to take place tomorrow (Saturday) but that depends on the judge,” a prosecutor’s spokesman told AFP.
In June, when the children were found in the Colombian forest, 40 days after the small plane they were traveling in crashed, William Castro, governor of the region where the family lived, told the Caracol television network that “there were indications” that Ranoke had raped the eldest of the children.
The governor had also presented a photo of injuries allegedly suffered by the children’s mother, which were believed to have been caused by Ranoke. He denies the charges.
The father of the two youngest children and their maternal grandparents are in a custody battle over the minors. According to the grandfather’s complaint, Ranoke was violent towards the children’s mother, who died in the plane crash. The four children, aged 13, 9, 5 and 1, were hospitalized for a month after being found in the jungle.
