The death toll from the terrible fire that almost wiped the city of Maui off the map, in the Hawaiian archipelago, has now exceeded one hundred dead, announced the governor of this US state, Josh Green, speaking to the CNN television network.

“101 lives have now been lost,” he said, adding that search crews had so far completed their work in just over a quarter of the operations zone.

The day before Monday, Mr. Green said that the toll of these fires, the deadliest in more than a century in the US, may “double” in the coming days. According to him, there were still around 1,300 missing people.

Lahaina, on the west coast of Maui, was almost completely destroyed by the flames. Thousands of buildings were destroyed, many reduced to gray piles of ash.

The former capital of the kingdom of Hawaii, which measured 12,000 inhabitants, is now counting its dead.

Authorities have been urging relatives of the missing for DNA tests in recent days to help identify the victims, as many of the bodies found are impossible to identify.
