Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said today that he intends to seek the support of the Spanish parliament to form a new government, following the July 23 election in which the conservative People’s Party came first in votes without securing a parliamentary majority.

“I will ask for the confidence of the parliament for the formation of a progressive government,” said Mr Sanchez addressing the parliamentary group of his party, the Socialist Party of Spain (PSOE).

Pedro Sanchez also said that his party, which came second in the number of votes, will first seek to elect the speaker of the parliament tomorrow.

He did not specify which parties would be part of the possible governing coalition, but has said his intention is to work with the Sumar alliance of the Spanish left.

Smaller local parties have a key role in choosing Spain’s next prime minister.

Pedro Sánchez took power in 2018 and since 2020 he has governed with a minority coalition government with the Podemos party.
