It is up to Ukraine to decide when the conditions are right to join any negotiations after the Russian invasion, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursdayunderscoring the alliance’s unchanged stance following his partner’s comments this week, Reuters reports.

“It is the Ukrainians and only the Ukrainians who can decide when the conditions for negotiations exist and who can decide at the negotiating table what the acceptable solution is,” Stoltenberg said.

Speaking at a conference in the Norwegian town of Arendal, he added that NATO’s role was to support Ukraine.

The statement followed statements by Stoltenberg’s NATO chief of staff, Stian Jensen, who said on Tuesday that Ukraine may eventually cede territory to Russia as part of a deal to end the war. Jensen later said he regretted his comments.

“Jensen’s message, which is my main message, and NATO’s main message, is, first, that NATO policy remains unchanged, we support Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.
