Joe Biden approved programs to train Ukrainian F-16 pilots in May, but so far no timetable has been given for giving Kiev the warplanes
Ukraine does not expect to add US F-16 fighter jets to its arsenal this year, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ikhnat said.
“It is obvious that we will not be able to defend Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets during this fall and winter,” Ikhnat said late yesterday, speaking on Ukrainian television.
The Ukraine has repeatedly asked Western allies for the F-16which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that supplying them would be a signal that the Russian invasion would end in Moscow’s defeat.
The president of the USA Joe Biden approved Ukrainian F-16 pilot training programs in May, but so far no timetable has been given for the delivery of the warplanes to Kiev.
“We had high hopes for this type of aircraft, that it will become part of our air defense, capable of protecting us from the terrorism of Russian missiles and drones,” Ikhnat said.
The West stresses that it wants to help Ukraine defeat Russia, but has repeatedly insisted it does not want to spark a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.
