The Chiefs of Defense General Staff of the ECOWAS member states met yesterday and today in the capital of Ghana to discuss the requirements of a military operation in Niger.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS or CEDEAO) has declared through its commissioner that it is ready for military intervention in Niger with the aim of restoring constitutional order in the country, in the wake of the coup that overthrew the elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, on July 26.
The Chiefs of Defense General Staff of the ECOWAS member states met yesterday and today in the capital of Ghana to discuss the requirements of a military operation in Niger.
ECOWAS commissioner Abdul Fattah Musa said today that “we are ready to intervene in Niger as soon as the mandate is given.” Asked about the possible date of the start of the military intervention, he claimed that “it has not been decided”, but added that he could not of course reveal it.
“We are not going to engage in endless dialogue,” added the ECOWAS commissioner, reiterating that taking military action is not an option, but appears to be the only way due to the intransigence of the junta in Niger.
