Moscow said today that it foiled a Ukrainian drone attack aimed at Moscow and the wider Russian capital region, as such attacks on Russian soil are on the rise amid a counter-offensive by Kiev forces.

“Around 04:00 [τοπική ώρα και ώρα Ελλάδας]an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist drone attack on Moscow infrastructure and the Moscow region was thwarted,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“There are no casualties or damage,” he added.

The drone was flying “in the direction of Moscow,” the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding that it “crashed in an uninhabited area.”

“Thanks to the military for their work” interception, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram.

Flights bound for Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports were “temporarily curtailed” overnight, Russia’s air transport agency Rosaviatsia said, according to the Ria Novosti news agency, before a quick return to their “normal operation”.

Besides, according to the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, a drone “crashed on the roof of the (railway) station, then a fire broke out.” It was extinguished at 03:46.

“The roof, the facade and the first pier were destroyed. In addition, as a result of the shock wave, there is damage to the waiting room and the pedestrian tunnel,” he said on Telegram.

Starovoit, an official of this region, which is located on the border with Ukraine, said that 50 people were at the scene at the time of the attack.

“Five people were slightly injured by pieces of glass,” three of whom “were taken to hospital for evaluation,” he said.

Further south, and still close to Ukraine, in the Rostov region, “two drones” were intercepted by Russian air defense, regional governor Vasily Golubev announced.

“They fell in the area of one military unit in Kamensk, the other, one kilometer north of Novosakhtinsk,” he said without elaborating on the targets of the attack. “There are no casualties or damage,” he added.

Ukrainian drone attacks on border areas and the Russian capital have become increasingly frequent in recent months, with repeated strikes in Moscow’s financial district.

Russia said in May that two Ukrainian drones attempted to attack the Kremlin.

Ukraine typically does not comment on who is behind the attacks, although officials have expressed public satisfaction over them.
