Baldwin: Suggests police officers oversee gun safety on movie screens |

As Hollywood considers new security measures following the deadly shooting of Halina Hutchins during the filming of Rust, actor Alec Baldwin said today that he believes film and television productions should hire police officers to oversee gun safety on set. .

On Oct. 21, during a rehearsal of a scene from the western film in New Mexico, cinematographer Halina Hutchins was fatally wounded when Baldwin fired a gun at him, claiming he was “dead” – that is, safe. However, the weapon contained, for unknown reasons, a real bullet.

Authorities are trying to find out how a real bullet was found in the weapon given to Baldwin. Lawyers for the officer in charge of the guns in the film, who oversaw the guns during filming, said she believed he had filled it with ammunition.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, producers and production team members are weighing whether new measures need to be taken to prevent a similar tragedy in the future. Baldwin said he believes productions need to hire police officers to ensure that the weapons used in the shooting are safe.

“Every film / television production that uses weapons, fake or otherwise, should have a police officer on set who will be hired by the production company with a specific role in overseeing gun safety,” Baldwin wrote on Twitter.

Others have called for a ban on real weapons from film and television sets. American protagonist Dwayne Johnson, known by the nickname “The Rock”, pledged last week to stop using real firearms during the filming of his films, after the fatal incident during the filming of Rust.
