EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano stressed that reports of Prigozhin’s death were difficult to verify.
THE European Union declined to comment on his presumed death of the leader of the Russian paramilitary organization Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin in a plane crash in Russia.
EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano stressed that reports of Prigozhin’s death were difficult to verify. “I mean, almost nothing that comes out of Russia these days is credible,” he said.
Stano also refrained from referring to the political ramifications Prigozhin’s death might have, given the doubts surrounding the case.
The European diplomacy spokesman added that he did not expect Wagner’s activities in crisis areas such as Ukraine, Syria and Libya to stop due to Prigozhin’s death because of the mercenary organization’s ties to the Russian government.
Russia’s Federal Aviation Administration (Rossaviatsia) announced yesterday that Prigozhin was aboard an Embraer Legacy 600 private jet that crashed in the Tver region, north of Moscow, killing all 10 people on board – seven passengers and three crew members.
There has been no official comment from the Kremlin or the Russian Defense Ministry on Prigozhin’s fate, but the Gray Zone Telegram channel linked to Wagner confirmed his death.
Russian authorities have announced that they have launched an investigation. According to unnamed sources cited by Russian media, the plane was shot down by one or more surface-to-air missiles.
