The arrest of an executive of the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) who allegedly “planned” and “ordered” three bloody attacks in 2018 in Tripoli, the capital of Libya, was announced yesterday Thursday by the head of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU).

“The forces arrested on Tuesday the leader of the Daesh (IS acronym in Arabic) terrorist organization, who was involved in the planning and management of terrorist acts targeting our country’s institutions and their officials who were martyred,” said Abdelhamid Dbayba. , prime minister of the CEE, which is recognized by the UN and has its headquarters in the capital, during his tenure.

The operation was jointly conducted by the Rada (“Deterrent”) Force and the Rabat al-Duro (“Shields”) Brigade of Tajoura (a suburb of Tripoli), according to the government’s press office. No details on the identity or nationality of the alleged jihadist have been released so far.

Mr Dbayba reiterated that his government is committed to “combating terrorism in all its forms” and “pursuing anyone involved” in terrorist acts and “enhancing stability across the country” despite “difficulties”. and the “challenges” of protecting Libya from “obscurants, terrorists and criminals”.

On 2 May 2018, 14 people were killed in a suicide bomber attack, claimed by IS, targeting the headquarters of the Libyan National Electoral Commission in Tripoli.

On September 10, 2018, a kamikaze bomber attack by the same organization targeting the headquarters of the National Oil Company (NOC) in the heart of the Libyan capital killed two of its staff and injured ten others.

On December 25, 2018, three people, including a Libyan diplomat, were killed in an attack claimed by IS against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Benefiting from the complete breakdown of security mechanisms in the country after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, IS, which carried out a series of deadly attacks across the country, turned Derna (east) and Sirte (north- central), from where he was expelled respectively in 2018 and at the end of 2016.
