Ukraine announced today the dismissal of the head of the State Emergency Service following an internal audit of the agency, which has played a prominent role since Russia invaded the country 18 months ago.

“The government has decided to dismiss Serhii Kruk from the position of Head of the State Emergency Service,” Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko said in a post on the Telegram app.

Klimenko did not give a reason for Crook’s dismissal, but said it followed the conduct of an internal audit about which he did not provide much information. He said Crook’s deputy, Volodymyr Demchuk, would act as head of the agency.

The agency plays an important role in trying to save lives, clear rubble and put out fires after Russian airstrikes and bombings.

Other personnel decisions will follow after the internal audit, Klimenko said, adding that the agency is still working normally.
