Spanish police and customs authorities announced today the seizure of nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine originating in Ecuador, marking the largest haul ever seized in the country.

This seizure took place yesterday, Wednesday, in the port of Algeciras, in southern Spain, and constitutes “the largest shipment of hidden cocaine (detected) in Spain to date”: 9,436 kilograms were found hidden in crates of bananas in a refrigerated container, explained the authorities.

This operation is an “unprecedented blow to one of the largest criminal organizations, at the global level, in the trafficking of cocaine, whose recipients were the main criminal networks in Europe”, according to the announcement, in which this organization is not named.

The logos of over 30 European criminal organizations, recipients of the shipment, were found on this shipment.

The organization in charge of this transport could send 40 containers a month to Europe and “had an extensive commercial network for sending containers from Ecuador to Spain”, also using the port of Vigo in the north-west of Spain.

Police have not announced any arrests during this operation.
