Tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated on Saturday night, decrying the Netanyahu government for its failure to fight crime in areas dominated by the Arab minority.

According to the organizers, more than 100,000 demonstrators took part in the rally organized in Tel Aviv, while similar demonstrations were held in several cities.

“Blood is flowing in our streets,” the mayor of Tira (nearly 30 km northeast of Tel Aviv) Maamoun Abdelai said during the rally. A municipal official in Thira was murdered on Monday by gunmen while inside his car.

The mayor of Tira accused the Netanyahu government of failing to crack down on crime among the Arab minority. Those who appointed far-right Itamar Ben Gvir as national security minister “don’t want to protect us,” he argued.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid called Itamar Ben Gvir a “sad racist” and a “sheer failure” in a speech in the northern city of Karkur. He pledged that the opposition will continue its fight until this ruling coalition collapses.

Since the beginning of the year, 156 people have died in violent incidents linked to crime among Israel’s Arab minority, double the number compared to the same period last year.

Members of the Arab minority are estimated at approximately 2 million, representing nearly 20% of Israel’s total population.
