The two were killed in Romania after the explosions that occurred yesterday Saturday near Bucharest at a liquefied gas filling station, while another 56 people have been injured.

Thirty-nine firefighters who rushed to the gas station in the town of Creventia, north of Bucharest, after the first explosion occurred were injured when there was a second.

The two dead are a couple: the man suffered a seizure, while the woman, who suffered serious burns, succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Among the injured are four police officers, Romanian Deputy Interior Minister Raed Arafat said, adding that some of the wounded have serious burns.

“We have flown two firefighters and two civilians overseas (to receive treatment) and more will follow,” he said in a statement.

The wounded were transported to Italy and Belgium, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry.

At the same time, Romania requested help through the EU’s Civil Protection mechanism to treat 18 burns, and Austria, Germany and Norway have offered help, EU Crisis Management Commissioner Janez Lenarcic wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The cause of the explosion is not yet known, while an investigation is underway.

“We know that the gas station was not operating, it was not licensed,” Arafat noted.

After the first explosion the fire spread to two fuel tanks and a nearby house.

More than 20 fire engines rushed to the scene, while residents were evacuated within a radius of 700 meters and traffic was suspended on a nearby main road, as announced by the Emergency Situations Service.

The fire was brought under control this morning.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis spoke of a “tragedy” in a Facebook post.
