French justice has launched an investigation into “incitement to discrimination and racial hatred” after a wild boar’s head was found in front of the Kingdom of Morocco’s consulate in Bigouglia, Corsica, a judicial source said today.
The severed head of the animal was found at noon in front of the door of the building and was quickly removed from there.
No written text or acceptance of responsibility was found.
In a press release, Michel Prozik, the prefect of Haute-Corsica, “condemns in the strongest terms this unacceptable act and expresses his full support to the Consul General of Morocco and its associates, as well as to all Moroccan citizens residing in this geographical division”.
When asked by AFP, Nazoua El Berak, Morocco’s consul general in Corsica, said she also “condemns the events”. “The results of the investigation are not yet available. I do not want to accuse anyone, nor to politicize the case. We must remain cautious and prudent. I have received calls from several Corsican elected officials who have expressed their support, including Gilles Simeoni, the president of the community of Corsica,” he added.
Corsica has a strong Moroccan community. According to a 2021 INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies of France) study based on the population in 2018, Morocco is the first country of origin for the foreign population, making up almost 30% of the island’s immigrants.
