A series of fires have broken out on the island of Sicily, with serious problems for the island’s residents and tourists.

The airport of the city of Trapani remained closed until late afternoon. A fire broke out in an area next to the runways, and after the great help of the Italian army in extinguishing it with the use of its helicopters, the airport was able to resume operations shortly after.

In the area of Skopelos, outside the city of Trapani, a hotel was threatened by flames and about forty tourists were evacuated by sea.

Near Mount Kofano, as always in Sicily, dozens of vacationers are trying to get away from an area where a fire broke out this afternoon. At the moment, only one helicopter is operating at this point, dropping seawater.

The Italian Civil Protection Service today sent six Canadairs along with two helicopters to deal with this difficult situation at the request of the regional governor of Sicily, Renato Scifani.
