Papua New Guinea will open its embassy in Jerusalem next week during Prime Minister James Marape’s visit to Israel, his spokesman said today.
“Yes, that’s correct,” replied a spokesman for Prime Minister Marape’s office when asked if the embassy would be open during next week’s visit.
In February, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that Papua New Guinea would open an embassy in the country for the first time in 2023.
Israeli media, including the Channel 14 television network and the Times of Israel newspaper, reported that the embassy would be inaugurated on Tuesday, September 5.
In the vast majority of them, the embassies of the countries with a diplomatic presence in Israel are located in Tel Aviv. Only the US, Kosovo, Guatemala and Honduras have transferred them to Jerusalem.
Israel captured and annexed East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and has declared it its “eternal and indivisible” capital, which is not recognized by the international community.
The Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future independent state.
