In particular, Charles Michel said that “The window of opportunity is open”, adding that EU leaders will discuss enlargement at the next European Council meetings. Mr. Michel also emphasized that “our Union is based on the fundamental values of human rights and dignity, democracy and solidarity. The rule of law ensures that we can live, work, create and trade fairly in a wide range of freedoms. With full respect for our diversity. In the EU, every citizen, every company must trust that they will be treated fairly — wherever they live or do business. This includes respecting the rights of minorities.” He also pointed out that “we must be ready — on both sides — by 2030 for enlargement.”

The President of the European Council spoke at the same time about natural disasters and climate neutrality, referring to both Slovenia and Greece. “We are facing unprecedented and interconnected crises. This summer’s natural disasters — here in Slovenia, in Greece and around the world — are urgent reminders of why we need to manage our transition to climate neutrality,” he noted.
