“The Wagner group will cease to exist” the vice president of the Russian Duma announced on Monday, Victor Sobolev, one of his close associates Vladimir Putin, while sending an ultimatum to the group’s fighters.

“The fighters will be able to pursue a civilian life or sign a contract with the Ministry of Defence. This is an illegal armed formation. There should be no armed men in the state who are not subjects of the state. This eventually led to a mutiny. We were on the brink of civil war,” Sobolev said, a reference to the June 24 coup attempt under Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Sobolev also clarified that only those Wagner fighters did not participate in the June mutiny can sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense.

Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that the Wagner Group has no official legal status.

Wagner exists “as a group that made a great contribution” to the Russian military operation in Ukraine, Peskov said, praising the “heroism” of its fighters.
