Two Russian fighters rose to intercept two US reconnaissance drones above the Black Sea, near Crimea, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Such incidents have occurred very often in this area in recent months.

After determining that the drones were “heading towards the borders of the Russian state” Moscow sent two fighters “to prevent a possible violation of the border” and “to prevent the reconnaissance mission” of these aircraft, the ministry said in its statement posted on Telegram.

The two U.S. drones, a Reaper and a Global Hawk, were “conducting a reconnaissance mission in the area of the Crimean peninsula” which Russia annexed in 2014. When Russian fighters arrived at the scene, the drones “changed direction and left the this zone, the ministry added.

On Sunday, Russia claimed it had intercepted a US drone approaching its border in the Black Sea. A similar incident happened in early August.
