A fire has broken out in one of Russia’s most popular resorts, in the Black Sea city of Gelendzhik, with hundreds of firefighters battling the flames, Reuters reports.

In a Telegram post, the city’s mayor, Alexei Bogodistov, said 441 people, more than 80 vehicles, firefighting planes and helicopters had been deployed to extinguish the fire.

On Tuesday, the local administration asked residents to come forward voluntarily to help emergency services. Footage circulating online shows the forested hills above the city engulfed in flames.

Wildfires are rare on Russia’s wet Black Sea coast, but much of Europe has been hit by heatwaves this summer, sparking fires across the continent.
