Five railway workers were killed when they were hit by a train near Turin, Italy’s public railway company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Rfi) announced today.

Workers were replacing rails outside Bradizzo station, on the line connecting Milan to Turin, around midnight yesterday, Wednesday, when they were hit by a train carrying wagons.

The train was traveling at a speed of about 160 kilometers per hour, Italian news agency ANSA reported, citing police.

“Rfi expresses its deep regret (…) and its condolences (…) to the families of the employees who have died,” the company said in a statement.

Two workers managed to escape the freight train and are safe and sound, ANSA added.

The train driver was treated for shock at the scene of the accident and then allowed to go home.
