A man accused of murder of his 18-year-old daughter for “reasons of honor” extradited from Pakistan to Italy to be tried in the country where the crime was committed.

Shabar Abbas was arrested last November in his village in eastern Pakistan, on suspicion of murdering his daughter, Shaman Abbas. The 18-year-old disappeared in April 2018, after he refused to travel to Pakistan to marry the man chosen by her family.

“We have taken a step so that justice will take its course after a horrible crime,” Justice Minister Carlo Nodio said, adding that the suspect was on his way to Italy.

About a year after Shaman’s disappearance, human remains were found near the family’s home in the northern Italian town of Novelara. From dental records they were found to belong to the 18-year-old.

Prosecutors believe the family was outraged when they discovered Shaman had entered into a bond with a man in Italy. They also believe she was killed when she returned home to collect some documents, having lived nearby for a time in the care of social services.

The father denies that his daughter is dead. Her uncle was also extradited from France to Italy to stand trial for the crime, along with two of her cousins.
