Democratic President Joe Biden announced he will meet with Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSandis on Saturday when he goes to assess the damage from Hurricane Italy, which hit the state this week.

But a representative of Mr. DeSandis, Jeremy Redfern, countered that no such meeting is planned.

Mr. Biden is asking Congress to approve billions of dollars worth of emergency funding after a series of disasters.

The Democratic president will seek re-election in the November 2024 presidential election.

The Republican governor is vying for his party’s nomination to be its presidential candidate in this election.

“We are not planning a meeting between the governor and the president tomorrow,” Mr. Redfern said by email. He argued that the security measures required would disrupt ongoing search and rescue operations.

The White House did not immediately respond when asked for comment.

Mr. Biden spoke with Mr. DeSandis repeatedly by phone this week ahead of the hurricane’s impact. On Wednesday, he stated that he does not see any partisan purpose in these talks.
