At least two people died on Tuesday after flash floods triggered by torrential rain turned Istanbul’s streets into raging rivers, Turkish authorities said.

The overnight storm flooded a subway station and forced authorities to rush dozens of people out of a municipal library, media reported.

Footage broadcast by Turkish television networks or uploaded to social media sites showed rushing waters sweeping cars and stalls away from a market.

The governor’s office announced that two people were dead.

The torrential rains followed an extremely dry summer during which water reservoirs in the giant city of 16 million people reached their lowest level in nine years.

The Turkish emergency response services also spoke of another two dead and four missing in the floods that hit the city of Kirklareli (northwest).
