Japanese police arrested a gunman Friday morning after an 11-hour siege, injuring one of three members of a medical team visiting him at home and taking a second hostage in Saitama, not far from Tokyo.

According to Japanese media, the perpetrator, between 50 and 70 years old, opened fire with a weapon described as a shotgun against one of the members of the medical team – physiotherapist, 41 years old -, used tear gas against the second and took the third hostage.

Police found the injured man outside the house, according to Jiji News Agency. He was taken to hospital and underwent abdominal surgery. No information has been released on his condition.

The hostage was a 44-year-old doctor, according to police. The member of the group who was attacked with tear gas was also taken to hospital.

Finally, the police raided the gunman’s house and arrested him.

The medical team visited the man to offer him psychological support and condolences after the death of his relative, according to the first information of the Japanese media.

About 110 residents of the area where the hostage-taking house is located have been evacuated by the authorities. Schools in the area were decided not to operate today.

Violent crime is generally rare in Japan, where gun ownership is strictly controlled.
