Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has canceled his participation in the September 9-10 G20 summit in India because he has been diagnosed with Covid-19, the government announced today.

Sanchez “tested positive this afternoon in the mandatory test he took to participate in the G20 summit,” according to the statement. “He won’t be able to move to New Delhi.”

The prime minister, who had tested positive for the coronavirus in the past, “is in a good mood and will continue to work at his residence”, the same source underlined.

Spain will be represented at the G20 by Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez and Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Nadia Calvino, the government said.

The G20 summit on September 9 and 10 is the next major round of negotiations in a packed schedule of meetings vital to action on global warming ahead of the UN climate conference in the United Arab Emirates starting in November.
