British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said today that it is not his role to tell India what position to take on Russia’s war in Ukraine. in an interview to news agency ANI.

“It is not for me to tell India what positions to take on international issues, but I know that India is rightly concerned about the international rule of law, the UN Charter and respect for territorial integrity,” Sunak said when asked about India’s attitude.

India has avoided to blame Moscow for the war in Ukraine and called for a solution through dialogue and diplomacy. The Financial Times reports today that Sunak will urge his Indian counterpart to “indict” Russia for war.

Russia, with today’s announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accused it Group of Seven (G7) of leading Western industrial nations that it is putting pressure on India ahead of the G20 summit in New Delhi.

The G7 countries (mainly the US, Britain, Germany and France) are putting pressure on India, trying to have their unilateral approaches to the situation around Ukraine reflected in the final documents of the G20 events,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

G7 countries condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine and they want to see that position reflected in the final statement of the G20 summit taking place this weekend. Russia is represented at the summit by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who arrived in New Delhi today.

“Against this background, the Indian side is trying to follow a neutral course, based on the strictly economic mandate of the G20,” Moscow’s statement said.

Lavrov also underlined that the session deals with economic issues and the stability of the financial system and not with issues of global security.

Moscow praised the Indian hosts for resisting Western calls to invite Ukraine, as host Indonesia did last year at the G20 summit in Bali. There have been attempts by the G7 to artificially expand an already packed agenda, Moscow said.
