Maritime and rail transport plan will enable trade, energy and data to flow across the Middle East
An agreement for the implementation of a major maritime and rail transport project that will run through the Middle East and connect India to Europe is, according to an American official, to be signed today, during the Summit of the leaders of the G20 group of countries that is being held this weekend in New Delhi.
Briefing reporters on expectations from the G20 summit, US Deputy National Security Adviser John Finner referred to the “agreement in principle between the US, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the EU and other partners G20 to consider one maritime and rail transport plan that will enable the flow of trade, energy and data from here, to India, through the Middle East and to Europe.”
The plan “has enormous potential, but I don’t know exactly how long it will take” for its implementation, Finner added, clarifying that “it is the result of months of prudent diplomacy.”
This announcement comes as US President Joe Biden works to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco have already established diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.
Details of the deal are expected to be announced later today.
However, according to news site Axios, the plan calls for the union of Arab countries by railway –which could be extended to Israel in the event of a normalization of its relations with Saudi Arabia — and then through Israeli ports the extension of the connection to Europebut also a sea connection with India.
