The coup plotters who have seized power in Niger have accused France of “developing its forces” in several West African countries with a view to launching an attack on the country.

“France continues to deploy its forces in several ECOWAS/CEDEAO countries in preparation for an attack on Niger, which it is planning in cooperation with this organization,” especially “in Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Benin,” said Major General Amadou Abdaraman, a top official of the military regime, in a statement read on state television yesterday Saturday.

After Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger at the end of July became the third country in the Sahel – a region faced with repeated attacks by jihadist organizations that pledge allegiance to al-Qaeda or the Islamic State – to experience a military coup since 2020.
